Backing & Score is an instrument-practice platform that runs in the browser — nothing to install, no extra hardware to buy. This page follows the path people actually take, learners first and teachers after, instead of listing features.
From the home page to your first practice session
None of the six steps below costs anything. Learners are free forever, and that is a decision of principle rather than a promotion.
Find a piece
The library on the home page filters by instrument, genre and difficulty. Everything in it is public-domain classical repertoire, engraved in house — so it depends on no publisher licence.
Sign in and the whole library opens, with no cap on how often you use it.
Open the player
The score plays with its backing, and the cursor follows note by note. Change the tempo anywhere from 50% to 200% without shifting pitch, and click any measure to jump straight there.
Turn on Wait Mode
The music stops at every note until you play it correctly. Two ways in: plug in a MIDI keyboard, or switch on the microphone. The microphone path hears full chords, so an acoustic piano or a plain organ works without buying anything else.
Detection runs inside your browser — the sound of your playing never leaves your machine.
Loop the hard bar
One tap loops four measures from where you are. Slow it down, get it clean, then walk the tempo back up.
Mute a part and play it yourself
For pieces with several stems, open the mixer: mute the piano to take that part yourself, or leave one instrument alone when you need to hear it closely.
Join your teacher's class
Your teacher gives you a six-character code. Enter it to join, receive assignments, and submit them on the same score you have been practising.
Being a student in a class is free.
From opening a class to knowing what was practised at home
This is the paid side, and what it charges for are the capabilities that cost real money — live-class minutes, storage — rather than locking away something everybody needs.
Open a class and invite students
Create the class, share a six-character code, manage the roster. Students join on a free account, so there is no friction at the invitation.
Set assignments
Attach a score and set a due date. You can add conditions too: require Wait Mode, restrict which measures must be practised, set a minimum tempo.
Teach live
The live classroom keeps the score in sync on both sides — same position, same page, same annotations. There is a whiteboard, and you can draw straight onto a PDF.
This is what a plain video call cannot do: everyone is looking at the same measure.
See what was actually practised
Every session is recorded with a label saying how it was captured: MIDI keyboard or microphone. Microphone sessions do count towards progress and assignments, at half weight.
The source label is there so you can weigh the evidence yourself, not so the system can decide for you.

A split layout: theory on one side, a playable score right beside it. Students try each idea where they read it, rather than juggling two tabs.
What you play on, and how much it counts
This is the table people misread most often, so it sits here rather than buried in a help page.

One limit worth stating rather than leaving you to discover it: the bass register is currently recognised less reliably than the middle. Laptop and phone microphones roll off sharply below roughly 150 Hz, while a D2 sits at 73 Hz — that is the microphone's physics, and it is an area under active work.
What the product does not grade
The system only handles mechanical accuracy — the right note at the right moment. It does not judge:
- Tone quality — fullness, resonance, how a key is struck
- Dynamics and balance — the relationship between parts, and between the two hands
- Phrasing — where a line breathes, breaks, and carries
- Pedal — not detected at all
- Posture, hand shape, movement
Mechanical accuracy happens to be what takes the most time early in a new piece, and it is exactly what a learner gets wrong at home without noticing. The intent is not to replace the teacher, but to free lesson time from correcting wrong notes.
